TAMPA, Fla. (KDVR) — The Colorado Avalanche knew to expect a different game from the Tampa Bay Lightning for Game 3 Monday night and that’s exactly what they got.

After getting on the board first, the Avs broke down and lost as a team. Gabriel Landeskog scored both goals in the 6-2 loss and Darcy Kuemper was pulled midway through the second period after allowing five goals on 22 shots and replaced with Pavel Francouz.

“He didn’t have a good night, you know? Neither did our team,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said of Kuemper after the loss at Amalie Arena. “We win as a team, lose as a team. Group him in with everybody else. Just wasn’t as good as we needed to be.”

Following Tuesday morning’s skate, Bednar said the team is using the St. Louis Blues series as a reference on how to move on after some letdowns and how to bounce back. He referred to the players’ resilience and mental toughness to get them past the loss and focused on the next game.

Who will start in net for Game 4 was asked but Bednar would not provide an answer. He did say that Nazem Kadri has been skating and shooting and that he’s an option but not sure how soon. As for Andre Burakovsky, he is still in Denver getting treatment and that he’s either going to skate Tuesday or Wednesday.

Adjustments needed going into Game 4

Even with the loss, Bednar said he feels the team did a lot of good things and generated a lot of scoring chances but just didn’t capitalize on them as they did in Game 2.

“Because we look at it, we set a high standard for our play and if we make mistakes that we’ve seen in the past, we’re repeating mistakes and we expect our guys and each other not to do that, and we did it again last night,” Bednar said.

“We did a lot of things good on our breakouts and arriving in D-zone coverage and keeping it tight and giving them no room and then we got loose a couple times and they capitalized on it. Our guys are well aware of some of the breakdowns that we had last night, some things that we have to clean up, some things that we’ll try to do differently. At the same time on the offensive side of it, we generated a fair number of chances that we liked.”

Bednar is confident that his players realize what needs to be done and isn’t individually calling any of his players out. He said the whole team needs to bounce back and how they do that has to be together and not separated.

He believes the Lightning had the competitive advantage in Game 3 that his team had in games 1 and 2 and said there will be some desperation in their play come Game 4. The Avs plan to clean up their mistakes and respond after the loss by capitalizing on scoring chances and playing a tighter game.

How the players are rebounding

Both Artturi Lehkonen and Jack Johnson acknowledged the team’s mistakes as a whole and said they’re focusing on staying the course.

“I think a lot of it is our own puck touches, cleaning it up, trying to come out of our zone a little cleaner,” Jack Johnson said about what needs to be addressed. “There’s a lot of things we can clean up on our own end that will eliminate some of those scoring chances against.”

The team is working on resetting and moving forward rather than letting the loss linger.

“We just gotta focus on the next game. Yesterday is in the past, we can’t do anything about it,” Lehkonen said. “It starts off with a good start next game. Today we just do whatever we gotta do to be ready for when the puck drops tomorrow.”
