SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — A stretch of Interstate 70 was fully closed for several hours on Wednesday after a deadly semi truck crash that killed the driver and hurt a nearby construction worker.

I-70 from the Loveland Pass exit to Silverthorne fully reopened just before 4 p.m. Wednesday after closing for the crash. It happened around 10:47 p.m. Tuesday on a westbound I-70 bridge east of Silverthorne.

The eastbound lanes of I-70 reopened around 11 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. A detour was in place via Loveland Pass.

“From what we can tell, it appears that the semi struck one passenger vehicle in front of it — resulting in no injuries — and then slammed into three parked construction vehicles before overturning and bursting into flames,” Summit County Fire and EMS said.

The driver of the semi died in the crash. The identity of the victim will be released by the coroner’s office once the next-of-kin is notified.

Construction workers scramble to escape crash, 1 hurt

Several construction workers on the ground had to scramble to get out of the way, and at least one was injured and taken to Summit Medical Center for treatment, according to Summit County Fire and EMS.

Timofey Malyshkin, of Thornton, was on a work rig and jumped for his life moments before the impact and explosion.

“An 18-wheeler crashed into the back of his truck, and two of his co-workers were able to run away from the scene and able to move out of the way,” his daughter, Amy Malyshkina, said. “When he saw the truck hit, he jumped out of his truck and into a ditch.”

Malyshkin was installing posts for guard rails on the highway, which is being repaved.

It was he who possibly helped save the lives of his co-workers.

“They saw the truck because my dad yelled, and they ran,” his daughter said.

Colorado State Patrol says the highway narrowed down to one lane where the crash happened.

Investigators continue trying to determine what led this fiery crash.

A GoFundMe has been started to help aid in Malyshkin’s recovery.
