HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (KDVR) — An English bulldog died after it was rescued on Friday by South Metro Fire following a fall through an icy pond in Cheese Ranch Park.

Officials say witnesses called 911 and remained on land after the dog broke through the ice on the pond. A SMFR scuba diver dove in to search for the animal.

“The owner did not go out, nobody went out after the dog, so we didn’t end up with multiple parties to save,” SMFR Captain Dan Goldan said.

After bringing the 7-year-old canine to shore, resuscitation efforts were performed but the dog did not make it.

Firefighters were also called to rescue two children who wandered onto a Douglas County pond Saturday. Luckily, they were able to get off the ice before firefighters arrived.

“It’s pretty common for people to underestimate the weakness of the ice,” Goldan said. “We always say no ice is ever safe.”

Goldan says warm temperatures have left most of the ice along the Front Range unstable. He says dog owners should keep their dogs on leash near bodies of water, to prevent them from suddenly running onto the ice.

He says never follow your dog onto the ice, and call 911.
