LAKEWOOD, Colo. (KDVR) — A victim and suspect are dead after a shooting outside the Walmart at West Fourth Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard in Lakewood.
Police said the victim, a man in his 20s or 30s, was shot and killed in the parking lot.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a middle-aged, white man shoot multiple rounds at the victim sitting in his car.
After killing the man, police say the suspect fled from the Walmart parking lot, crossed Wadsworth and attempted to highjack employees’ cars at the nearby Grease Monkey.
“He threatened us — ‘Is your life worth it, is your life worth it?’ Then my manager saw the gun,” Grease Monkey employee Dezirae Kendle said, adding, “I froze. I couldn’t move.”
After leaving Grease Monkey, police say the suspect shot at homes, police and an officer’s car.
“The entire time the suspect was shooting off a handgun, this was an active shooter incident from the first shots that were fired until the incident ended,” Lakewood Police Public Information Officer John Romero said.
Lakewood police officers returned fire and the suspect was hit. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
LPD said the suspect was a man in his 20s or 30s. His identity has not yet been released.
“It’s a sad situation, the violence you are seeing right now, but we’re doing the best we can to keep our community safe,” Romero said.
No officers were injured, according to Lakewood police officials.
The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the officer-involved shooting. Per policy, the Lakewood agents who shot the suspect will be placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
