DENVER – Thousands gathered Saturday to honor Denver police officer Celena Hollis, who was fatally wounded while trying to break up a fight in City Park on June 24.

The incident occurred during the kickoff event for the popular Jazz in the Park concert series.

Hollis was a seven-year veteran of the Denver Police Department and a single mother of a 12-year-old daughter.

Hollis’ daughter spoke at the service, saying her mom was a “very nice person, who was always adventurous and loved to travel,” adding that her mom was a “second mother to many of (her) friends.”

Other speakers remembered Hollis’ sense of style, referring to the many pairs of shoes on display at the church.

“We believe she is in a better place now. She died protecting the city, county and state,” says Denver Police spokesman John White. “We’ve got law enforcement officers from all across the state at the services today.”

“We’ll just miss her. We love her. We’ll do everything we can to help that girl of hers,” says Ralph Addison, a Denver Sheriff’s deputy.

“She was the only person (I) knew who could go on a CrossFit run and have perfect hair at the end of the run,” said one officer.

A fundraiser will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday for Hollis’ 12-year-old daughter at Eden, located at 3090 Downing Street.

Hollis will be honored with a silent vigil at the same concert series where she lost her life. A band will also play some of Hollis’ favorite music.

Officer Celena Hollis transferred to the Denver Police Department on October 3rd, 2005 after serving as a police officer with the Detroit Police Department. She served as a patrol officer in District Two and was a member of the Street Crime Attack Team (SCAT).  She used her Critical Incident Training skills to de-escalate several hostile and potentially violent incidents, including successfully assisting an Iraqi war veteran who suffered from PTSD. Officer Hollis has been recognized numerous times for her outstanding performance and service to the community.

Officer Hollis served as the President of the Denver Police Department Black Police Officers Organization and was a resident of Denver. She is survived by her twelve year daughter and the rest of her family. She was an amazing person with an engaging smile who was well liked and respected by her colleagues and the community she served. She will be missed.
