AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — A male has died after an officer-involved shooting Monday morning in Aurora.

According to Aurora Police Department Public Information Officer Crystal McCoy, at 11 a.m. the Denver Police Department responded to a carjacking at East 48th Avenue and North Chambers Boulevard. APD says the suspect kidnapped the male driver of the vehicle and proceeded to drive to 35th and Abeliene Street.

APD reports the Denver Police Department followed the car at a safe distance. At approximately 11:20 a.m., DPD requested assistance from APD. Officers say a fully masked suspect emerged from the vehicle with a handgun.

McCoy said all officers had their body cams on during the incident.

According to DPD Division Chief Ron Thomas, officers engaged the suspect and gave him several verbal commands to drop the weapon he was holding in his hand.

“He threatened the officers with the weapon and that’s when the officers discharged their weapons,” Thomas said.

Five DPD officers and one APD officer fired shots.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His name and age have not yet been released.

No officers were injured.

Both departments say the suspect was a male, either white or light-skinned Hispanic.

The carjacking victim was not in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing. APD is asking anyone with information to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
