GREELEY, Colo. — A music teacher at a school in Greeley was arrested and charged after school officials alerted police of a possible relationship between the teacher and a 16-year-old student.

Christopher Adams-Wenger, a staff member at Union Colony Prep School, was arrested on Sept. 6 after a detective with Greeley police found evidence of illegal activity between the teacher and juvenile.

Adams-Wenger, 32, was charged with sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust and sexual assault on a child/pattern of abuse, both felonies.

A biography of the suspect posted on the Union Colony Prep School website said he taught music classes in Illinois before moving to the Greeley school, where he teaches in the theater department.

Greeley police said the investigation into the case remains active.

Parents near the school say it is highly regarded, and the news is alarming.

“It’s sad because it’s a great school,” said Adam Jones. “When I first heard about it, I was getting a little nauseous in my stomach. It’s terrible.”

Jones says he’s been considering sending his 11-year-old daughter to Union Colony for high school, and says he’ll be watching how they handle the situation.

“He should be put on suspension, right away. Do an investigation, and if it comes out to be true, I think he should be in jail,” Jones said.

Adams-Wenger has been placed on leave during the investigation.

On Friday, the school’s director, Jim Anderson, sent the following statement to parents:

“Chris Adams-Wenger, a choir/orchestra teacher at Union Colony Preparatory School, was arrested today, September 6, 2019 by the Greeley Police Department. He is facing a felony criminal charge of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust. See C.R.S. § 18-3-405.3.

Mr. Adams-Wenger remains employed at Union Colony but was placed on leave Wednesday, September 4, 2019, after allegations of sexual assault were reported to school administration.

Mr. Adams-Wenger has worked at the Union Colony Preparatory School since August, 2016.

Union Colony Schools and Greeley-Evans School District 6 are working cooperatively with the Greeley Police on this matter.Student safety and security is always the number one priority at Union Colony/District 6.
