ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. —  Colorado State Patrol said 37-year-old William Moden was the trooper who died after he was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 70 in eastern Arapahoe County Friday night.

According to Col. Matthew Packard with CSP, Moden served as a trooper for 12 years.

“We lost today. Our state lost a tremendous servant and a guy who loved being a state trooper,” Packard said during an early morning press conference. “He loved his family. He loved being a trooper.”

According to Packard, Moden was assisting with a serious injury crash when he was hit.

The crash happened on I-70 near mile marker 324, between Peoria and Deer Trail. A fellow trooper at the scene started to render aid, and Moden was transported to University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.

CSP said Moden lived in the Denver area.

A memorial to Moden is growing as flowers and cards are placed on a vehicle outside office of the Colorado State Patrol.

The highway was completely closed between Peoria (mile maker 322, near Deer Trail) and Limon (mile marker 360). It reopened shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday.

Anyone looking to make a donation in Moden’s name can contribute online to The Adoption Exchange.
