LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Interstate 70 eastbound in Lakewood will remain closed into Saturday as crews work to repair asphalt after Thursday’s crash and massive fire. The westbound lanes have been reopened.

The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on Friday afternoon that I-70 eastbound will remain closed in order to assess the depth of damage to the asphalt. The integrity of the bridge over the highway has been cleared for safety, causing the reopening of westbound I-70.

CDOT estimates that at least two inches of the asphalt needs to be replaced, but it is possible up to four inches will need to be replaced.

Multiple people were killed in a crash and fire on Interstate 70 in Lakewood Thursday.

The crash occurred where I-70 goes underneath Denver West Colorado Mills Parkway.

The Lakewood Police Department said the highway could be closed into Saturday. A detour for westbound traffic has been established using the Denver West on and off ramps.

FOX31 and Channel 2’s Hank Cary recommends taking an alternate route to avoid the crash area:

  • Use Highway 58 between downtown Golden/U.S. 6 and I-70
  • Use U.S. 6 (6th Avenue Freeway) instead of I-70 to get to central Denver/I-25. Drivers can also use Kipling Street and 6th to avoid the closure area and reconnect to I-70.
  • Take C-470 to Highway 285 or vise-Versa. Note that eastbound C-470 will be closed at Santa Fe for construction until 5:30 a.m. Friday.

The Lakewood police are asking if you have information or were a witness, have footage or questions, please call 303-763-6800 and they will return your call.
