WESTMINSTER, Colo. — A suspect was shot by an off-duty officer during a disturbance in a shopping center parking lot on Thursday night, the Westminster Police Department said.
The incident happened about 7:30 p.m. in front of a Ross store at the Orchard Town Center at West 144th Avenue and Huron Street just west of Interstate 25.
Two off-duty officers heard a disturbance between a male and a female in the parking lot, police said.
The officers tried to intervene and identified themselves. Police said the man jumped into a vehicle and tried to leave and hit one of the officers.
At least one of the officers then opened fire. The man then left the parking lot, police said.
Police were later notified the man was at a hospital with gunshot wounds. His condition is unknown, but he is expected to survive.
The officer hit by the suspect suffered minor injuries.
The female involved in the altercation was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
Both officers have been placed on routine paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated by the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Investigation Team.
