AURORA, Colo. — The suspect shot during an officer-involved shooting at a motel early Wednesday has died, the Aurora Police Department said.
The shooting happened about 12:30 a.m. at the Biltmore Motel at 8900 E. Colfax Ave. at Yosemite Street near the Aurora-Denver border.
Officers had been investigating an incident a few blocks away and heard shots fired.
When they got to the motel, they found shell casings on the ground. A person matching a description from a witness then ran by the officers, who followed him.
Officers repeatedly told the man to stop, but he refused, police said.
The suspect ran around a corner of a building. As officers rounded the corner, they came face to face with the suspect. They told him to drop his gun.
One officer then shot the suspect. No officers were injured. Officers secured a handgun near where the suspect was laying.
Officers began rendering aid and requested emergency medical services. They applied a tourniquet to the man’s leg.
The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he died later Wednesday morning.
Police said three officers were on the scene, with one of them firing shots. All three officers were wearing body cameras.
The officer who fired his weapon has been with Aurora police for three years.
He is 30 years old and has not been in an officer-involved shooting before. He does not have a disciplinary history with the department.
The two officers at the scene who did not shoot their weapons have also been with Aurora police for three years and do not have a disciplinary history.
The name and age of the suspect were not released. Police said he has an extensive state and federal criminal history.
Police said they will continue to investigate — “up to and including review of body cam video,” it said Wednesday afternoon.
The Denver Police Department and the Denver District Attorney’s Office are assisting Aurora police.
This is the second officer-involved shooting in the Denver area in less than 24 hours.
On Tuesday, a Westminster motorcycle officer shot a burglary suspect. That officer was not injured and there is no word on the condition of the suspect.
