CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — A Colorado State Patrol trooper was killed in a crash on Interstate 25 south of Castle Rock on Friday afternoon.

The CSP identified the trooper as Cody Donahue, an 11-year-veteran. Donahue was married, and he and wife have two young daughters.

The CSP said the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the crash along the northbound lanes near Tomah Road. It happened about 1:50 p.m.

A commercial food truck hit the trooper while he was investigating a separate crash. The truck driver remained at the scene.

The sheriff’s office said the truck driver has been detained. A spokesman said a criminal investigation was underway related to the crash, and investigators were working with the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office on charges. They expected the filing of charges and an arrest of the driver would take place.

The sheriff’s office said Donahue was outside of his vehicle and wearing a reflective green safety vest when he was hit.

“We don’t call them accidents for a reason. This was a crash that could have been avoided.” Colorado State Patrol spokesman Josh Lewis said.

“This is becoming much too frequent in our community, and quite frankly needs to stop,” Maj. Steve Garcia said.

“When you see these troopers and you see these law enforcement officers that are out trying to do their job, please move over. Give them the room that they need because if not, this is what happens and it continues to happen on a regular basis,” sheriff’s chief deputy Steve Johnson said.

Northbound I-25 was closed at Tomah Road until about 8 p.m. Friday.

The original call came in around 1:50 p.m. reporting the accident at mile marker 180.

Several law enforcement vehicles led a procession from the crash scene to the justice center in Castle Rock when the coroner removed the trooper’s body after 4 p.m.

A drunk driver struck and killed her while she was outside her vehicle at a crash scene near where Friday’s crash happened.
