CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — A gunman shot and killed a deputy, and wounded three other deputies, a SWAT officer and two civilians at an apartment complex during a noise-related call early Sunday morning, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Douglas County deputy Zackari Parrish, 29, was killed when the gunman opened fire on deputies at the Copper Canyon Apartments complex at 3404 E. County Line Road in Highlands Ranch, between Colorado and University boulevards.

Parrish is survived by his wife and two young children.

One person who knows all too well what the law enforcement community of Douglas County is going through is former Denver police officer John Adsit.

Adsit was hit by a car and critically injured on the job three years ago.  Now he runs the nonprofit called Adsit Strong that helps other first responders critically injured in the line of duty.

“There is a psychological and emotional pain that will just never really go away,” Adsit said.  “My gut, it’s been churning all day, and you know, I don’t have words.  I don’t think words can express at a time like this the pain that these families, and the friends of these officers, are going through.”

Adsit said there are many ways to help those affected by the shooting.

“They are expected to protect us, and so we want to make sure we are protecting them,” said Jake Skifstad of Shield 616.

But just as important as the financial support is the emotional support. Adsit said it was the cards and emails that helped get him through his down days.
