ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Broncos coach Gary Kubiak told the team Monday that Trevor Siemian will be the team’s starting quarterback when the season begins Sept. 8 in a Super Bowl 50 rematch with the Carolina Panthers.

Siemian, a second-year player from Northwestern who was taken in the seventh round of the draft in 2015, was in competition with Mark Sanchez and first-round draft pick Paxton Lynch for the starting job.

“I felt very strongly that he had won the job, and that’s exactly what I told the quarterbacks and the football team,” Kubiak said. “The guys gave Trevor a big hand in the meeting room. I think they’re all as proud of him as I am and the coaches. They know how hard he’s worked.”

The competition dominated the offseason and training camp. Sanchez, who was acquired in a trade in the offseason with the Philadelphia Eagles, started the Broncos’ first preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

Siemian started the second preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers and on Saturday in the “dress rehearsal” game against the Los Angeles Rams. Siemian led the Broncos on a touchdown drive in each of the two games he started.

On Saturday, Siemian played the entire first half, completing 10 of 17 passes for 122 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Sanchez did not play against the Rams.

“I’m impressed,” Kubiak said after the game.

Siemian and Sanchez were considered “neck and neck” by Kubiak a few weeks before training camp.

Sanchez led the New York Jets to two AFC Championship Games but only played in 13 games the past three seasons. He’s expected to be traded or cut by the Broncos as they trim their roster.

NFL Network reported the Broncos are in talks with the Dallas Cowboys about trading Sanchez.

The Broncos lost their two quarterbacks during the offseason. Peyton Manning retired and Brock Osweiler left as a free agent to sign with the Houston Texans.

The first team is not expected to play in the final preseason game Thursday at Arizona. The Broncos open the season Sept. 8 against the Carolina Panthers at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in a rematch of Super Bowl 50, which the Broncos won, 24-10, on Feb. 7.

The Broncos released 11 players on Monday and must cut four more by 2 p.m. Tuesday to get down to 75 players.
