DENVER — Two suspects are in custody and another in the hospital after an officer-involved shooting just a few feet from one of Denver’s busiest streets Tuesday afternoon.

It began shortly before 5 p.m. when the Denver Police Department said officers discovered a car in the parking lot of Denver Community Credit Union at 1095 Federal Blvd. that had been taken in a carjacking in Arapahoe County.

When officers approached the vehicle, they said three suspects got out of the car and took off running. After scaling a fence, police said one of the suspects pulled out a gun.

Police said that’s when at least one officer drew his gun and shot the suspect in the leg. He suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. The other two suspects, a man and woman, were taken into custody.

Witnesses watched from inside the bank.

“All we heard was pop, pop, pop, and everyone ran into the bank thinking we were getting shot at,” said Bernie Valverde, who was inside the bank.

Valverde said she was most concerned for her young niece and two nephews who were in a car in the parking lot with their grandmother.

“My grandma jumped out of the car and my auntie was pointing out the window and saying get back in the car,” said 8 year-old Giovanni Diaz, who witnessed the shooting.

“I didn’t know what was going on, but people were jumping behind the counter. We thought we were getting robbed inside the bank,” Valverde said.

Police shut down several blocks as they scoured the neighborhood with police dogs looking for more potential suspects.

But they believe only three suspects were involved. At least one, and possibly all three, are juveniles.

Police aren’t saying how many shots were fired or how many officers fired shots, but the suspect is expected to survive. The suspect’s names have not been released.
