PARKER, Colo. — A woman called the FOX31 Denver Problem Solvers after she paid a $6,000 down payment for a custom pergola and got nothing.

Lisa Schmidt said it’s too hot to enjoy her outdoor patio because it’s in direct sunlight from morning until sunset. So last summer, she found what she thought was a perfect fit: A custom pergola from Honey Won’t Do that she found at the Home and Garden Show.

The company’s owner came by her house for estimates; Schmidt signed a contract and paid $6,000 as a down payment. She was told the work would be done by July 4, 2015.

“I called and called and called, left numerous voicemail messages and didn’t get any response,” Schmidt said.

July 4 came and went and no pergola or response from the company. So Schmidt took matters further by hiring a lawyer, filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and contacting police.

“It would have been even more financially draining on me to take him to court for court fees and other issues,” Schmidt said.

The Problem Solvers obtained documents showing the Honey Won’t Do has numerous complaints, an F rating from the BBB, and the owner, Brad Ivers, has a warrant out for his arrest.

“That would be a secondary bonus for me to get the money back, but the main thing is to say scam alert and not let him get anyone else,” Schmidt said.

And as for her pergola …

“I’ve waited this many years to get it, maybe I’ll wait another couple,” she said.

The Problem Solvers contacted the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, which said it is still searching for Ivers, who has 18 charges of theft awaiting him in court.
