ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Patients at Swedish Medical Center were angry Thursday after they were told to get tested because a former surgical tech might have infected them with HIV and/or hepatitis.

Some said the LabCorp facility in Lakewood wasn’t ready when they arrived Thursday morning for testing.

Late Thursday night, Swedish Medical Center said in a statement that LabCorp responded.

“We strive to make patient experiences seamless and easy. This is a special circumstance that involves unique test orders. We have communicated with all of our Colorado Patient Service Centers on the correct way to handle this situation,” the statement read.

The hospital announced Wednesday that 2,900 patients should get tested. Some of them had already lined up lawyers Thursday.

According to a spokeswoman for the hospital, 1,545 patients have been contacted. As of Thursday night, 234 patients have gone in for testing.  Once a patient goes in for testing, the results should be available in seven to 10 days.

Patients are being strongly urged to do the screening through LabCorp because the hospital has coordinated, preauthorized and paid for all 2,900 people to be tested through the company’s clinics. Patients can get tested elsewhere and can request reimbursement from the hospital.
