DENVER — Two teenagers, including one who was 17 years old at the time, have been charged with murder in the death of taxi cab driver Darren Bloomquist, the Denver District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday.

Dasean Perry, 19, and Nicholas McKinney, 18, have each been charged with one count of first-degree felony murder. McKinney was 17 at the time of Bloomquist’s death and is being charged as an adult.

Bloomquist, 49, was killed in the early-morning hours of Sept. 5 when he picked up a fare in the area of 20000 E. Mitchell Place in Denver’s Green Valley Ranch neighborhood.

Bloomquist was moonlighting as a driver to help pay the bills of his wife, Melva, who could not work because of an injury.

A teen — who officials have not identified — was arrested on an unrelated charge on Sept. 10 and Denver police said Sept. 17 they served that teen with an arrest warrant for first-degree murder in the death of Bloomquist. But less than a week later, the DA’s office said it wasn’t filing charges at the time.

The DA’s office alleges Perry and McKinney were participating in an attempt to rob Bloomquist when the cab driver was shot and killed.

Perry and McKinney are being held without bond. They are schedule to appear in Denver District Court on Wednesday morning.
