HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — A woman in Highlands Ranch is recovering from serious injuries after being hit by a car while jogging Tuesday morning.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said the driver then took off and is asking for the public’s help tracking down that person.

The crash happened around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday on South University Boulevard near South Crossland Way.

Deputies are looking for a red Toyota or Lexus that is missing the passenger side-view mirror and has front-end damage. Investigators said they do not have any leads.

Tina Benner was running on University on Tuesday morning as part of her training for next month’s Denver Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon. Friends said a girl walking to school found Benner injured, lying in a ditch.

Benner was airlifted to St. Anthony Hospital where she underwent surgery for serious injuries to her leg and head. Friends said she was awake after surgery and is in stable condition but is not out of the woods yet.

“We’re praying and hoping that she continues her healing path. So far that’s been going pretty well. She is as well as can be expected anyway,” said Andy Dunning, a pastor at St. Andrew United Methodist Church where Benner is a member.

St. Andrew held a prayer vigil for Benner on Tuesday night. The members are also planning to help the family with meals while she recovers.

“They need to know they are not alone,” Dunning said.

A traffic camera is positioned along University across the street from the site of the hit-and-run. However, the cameras are not monitored and do not record video.

The stretch of road is usually very busy, so deputies are hoping someone might have seen something.
