DENVER — As police continue to search for the killer of a Metro Taxi driver, a fund has been established to help his grieving widow.

Darren Bloomquist, 49, was shot and killed while driving a cab early Saturday morning. It happened in Green Valley Ranch. Now his friends and fellow cab drivers are doing anything they can to bring his killer to justice and pay their respects.

“Every car that’s been in here has been getting this done on it,” Metro Taxi quality control manager Ryan McBride said.

Taxi’s from every company in town are getting “stripped” by drivers.

“Everybody’s supporting and showing their respect. Think we’ve gone through about two to three rolls of tape today, ” McBride said.

Black tape is being put across the left headlight, a sign of support and respect for their dead colleague.

“It’s nice to see,” McBride said.

“We consider ourselves family,” Metro Taxi general manager Kyle Brown said.

Not far from the fleet, the lawn outside Metro Taxi headquarters is covered with a makeshift memorial for Bloomquist.

“I believe we are still in shock. It’s hard to imagine how such a senseless crime can just happen,” Brown said.

The crime leaves a widow unable to care for herself. Bloomquist had been moonlighting as a driver to help pay the bills.

“Darren worked hard to provide for his family. His life was taken prematurely, unnecessarily. It was taken providing a necessary service to the community,” Brown said.

As police hunt for a suspect, Brown said, “It’s someone who will kill and they need to be off the streets. Apprehended, captured, jailed, just taken off the streets.”

It’s another small gesture they hope the community they serve will support.

“I can’t imagine what kind of loss it is. It’s terrible on so many levels,” Brown said.

Oakwood Homes, a company headquartered in Green Valley Ranch where the death happened, said it will match donations to Bloomquist’s family, up to $10,000.

Metro Taxi is also putting up a $5,000 reward for tips leading to an arrest. That’s on top of $2,000 from Crime Stoppers.

A memorial service for Bloomquist is scheduled at Metro Taxi headquarters at 5909 E. 38th Ave. on Sept. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s open to the public.
