CENTENNIAL, Colo. — A jury of nine women and three men began deliberations Wednesday morning in the Aurora theater shooting trial. The jury assembled at the Arapahoe County Justice Center at 9 a.m. to begin the deliberations.

Seven alternates were also required to be in attendance and are in a separate room away from the deliberations.

The jury will need to determine if the Aurora theater shooter was sane or insane at the time of the mass shooting that killed 12 people and injured 70 others on July 20, 2012.

After more than two months, the theme of closing arguments on Tuesday was: What is the legal threshold of insanity?

The prosecution is relying on the two forensic psychiatrists who say the shooter is legally sane and knew right from wrong.

The defense countered with two mental health experts of its own who found the shooter insane.

The 12 jurors were selected after closing arguments. They will deliberate until 5:30 p.m. unless they reach a verdict, which is not expected Wednesday because there are more than 600 verdict forms that need to filled out.

If no verdict is reached Wednesday, they will return Thursday morning. There will be no deliberations Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
