BRIGHTON, Colo. — A father was killed and a mother and their four children were injured in a crash on Interstate 76 in Brighton on Thursday morning. “It makes us feel very bad. There was ways to prevent this,” said Commander Frank Acosta with Brighton Police Department. Police went to I-76 near Buckley Road about 9:30 a.m. Thursday and found an SUV on its roof. “Witnesses state that a left rear tire blew out, vehicle lost control, went off the right side of the road, rolled 2 1/2 times and came to rest on its top,” Acosta said. Five of the six family members flew from the SUV. The father died, and a woman and their four children, ranging from infant to 5 years old, were injured. Police believe the family from Illinois was vacationing in Colorado. “A lot of stuff in the car, children’s clothing, kid’s toys,” Acosta said. With the exception of one child in a car seat, police said no one else was in car seats or wearing seat belts. “Wearing your seat belt very simply can save your life,” said Sam Cole with the Colorado Department of Transportation. Cole said 18 percent of people in Colorado don’t wear their seat belts. “I think a lot of people feel like I’m just going down to the store, I’m just driving in my neighborhood, I don`t need to worry about buckling up,” Cole said. But that resulted in 156 deaths in 2013. Cole urges people to avoid the risk. “Research shows us that if everyone in Colorado buckled up, we would be able to save 60 lives,” he said. One lane of I-76 westbound was closed for several hours during the investigation.
