ROGGEN, Colo. — An emaciated horse was discovered tied up inside an abandoned trailer, flipped over on a rural dirt road in Weld County.

Michelle Daughenbaugh, who lives in Weld County, happened to see the trailer from the eastbound lane of I-76 on Wednesday, June 2.

“I told my sister, stop! There’s still a horse in there,” Daughenbaugh explained.

Daughenbaugh stopped some folks and was able to free the horse. Her sister called 911.

Deputies from the Weld County Sheriff’s Office responded.

“In the meantime, the owner showed up out of nowhere. She pulled up on the side and I said, ‘who are you?’ and she said ‘I’m the owner of the horse’ and I said ‘what is she doing here and why?’ Daughenbaugh said.

From the moment the owner showed up, Daughenbaugh said she changed her story time after time.

Initially, the owner claimed someone stole her horse.

“She said about 20 minutes later he called me back and said ‘I saw the wreck on the side of the road but I can’t stop because I have a warrant for my arrest’”, Daughenbaugh explained.

Deputies said it’s difficult to find who the trailer belongs to because it had no plates or VIN number attached to it.

In regards to whether investigators believe the owner is somehow involved, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office simply said, “Can’t say one way or the other.”

The horse survived and walked away with a few cuts. It is with the woman who claimed to be its owner.

The Weld County Sheriff’s Office plans to send Animal Control out to follow up on the horse and its owner.
