DENVER — A 3-year-old boy who was struck by a car on Friday died late Saturday night, police said.
The car hit a mother and her two children while they were crossing South University Boulevard at East Ohio Avenue on Friday. The 3-year-old boy was in extremely critical condition at Children’s Hospital following the accident and was unable to recover from his injuries.
The driver, an elderly woman, stayed on the scene of the accident, which is right outside the popular Bonnie Brae Ice Cream store in Denver’s Bonnie Brae neighborhood.
The mother and the boy’s 7-year-old sister were treated and released.
A stroller was crumpled on the side of the street. Police said it carried some items but the family was in the crosswalk and appeared to have the right of way according to what witnesses told investigators.
Witnesses said the mother was holding her children’s hands while they crossed the busy street.
The driver of the car was going west on Ohio Avenue and turned left onto University when the family was hit.

Southbound University was closed and there was a large traffic jam in the area until later Friday evening.
