ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The winds of change are blowing through Dove Valley. And they might blow three coaches out of town before the end of the week.

What’s more, all three of those coaches — the top three coaches of the 2014 Denver Broncos — could be named head coaches of three different teams as early as Thursday.

In the midst of the uncertainty that has set in following the Broncos’ 24-13 playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, it’s quite clear that if all three of those coaches ended up accepting head coaching jobs elsewhere, it would be unprecedented.

The only similar situation that has come to pass in the NFL’s modern day era since the merger occurred in 2005, when two coordinators for the Super Bowl-winning New England, Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weis, became head coaches of different teams the following the big win. But not all three coaches left the team, as Bill Belichick remained head coach of the Patriots, and Weis accepted a head coaching job in the college ranks, taking over at Notre Dame.

So how likely is it to happen this week? It depends on who you ask.

According to reports, 2014 Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase may or may not be on the verge of becoming the new head coach in San Francisco 49ers after interviewing with the team on Wednesday.

NFL reporters seem more confident 2014 Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio will be named the new head coach with the Oakland Raiders this week, this after he had a second interview with the team on Wednesday and an Associated Press report that interim head coach Tony Sparano will not be invited back.

As for 2014 Broncos head coach John Fox, who mutually agreed to part ways with the team on Monday, he was reportedly set to interview with the Chicago Bears for their head coaching vacancy on Wednesday.

The Broncos were also vigilantly searching for a new head coach on Wednesday, with multiple reports suggesting the team was meeting with Gase Wednesday morning before he makes any decisions. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was also reporting the Broncos have requested permission to interview Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin.

The Broncos don’t seem to be the only team in pursuit of Austin, as he was reportedly scheduled for a second interview with the Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday, and has also reportedly interviewed with the Bears.

In seeking an interview with Austin, the Broncos may be showing that experience isn’t high on their list of desires in a head coach. Though Austin was impressive in turning the Lions’ into the NFL’s second-best defense in 2014, that was the 49-year-old’s first season as a coordinator. And he has no head coaching experience.
