DENVER — The country’s biggest soda makers promise to reduce the amount of calories in their products.

Coca Cola and Pepsi face intense pressure to make changes in a country that’s trying to deal with a growing obesity epidemic.

They both announced Tuesday they will decrease the calories consumers get from their drinks by over 20 percent in the next 10 years.

Nutritionists welcome the announcement. “I think that cutting out liquid calories is something that is beneficial for all Americans and we know they are a significant source of calories,” says certified dietician Jessica Crandall.

The companies will reduce calories not by changing the amount of sugar in their products, but by making the size of their bottles and cans smaller.

They will also continue to aggressively market water and flavored water.
