DENVER — A sheriff’s deputy assigned to the Denver jail has been arrested in connection with the escape of an inmate, police said Monday.

The deputy has been identified as Matthew Andrews, a two-year veteran of the department.

Andrews was assigned to general security at the Van Cise-Simonet Detention Center, which serves as the primary intake center for the city and county.

Denver police have taken the lead in the investigation and would not comment on what role Andrews played allegedly helping Felix Trujillo escape from the jail Sunday night.

He was arrested Sunday night on a charge of assisting in an escape — a class 3 felony, said Lt. Matt Murray of the Denver Police Department.

Trujillo was able to leave the jail around 7 p.m. wearing a sheriff’s deputy jacket, said sheriff’s office spokesman Major Frank Gale. He did not have a weapon.

Gale said the sheriff’s department looked at security measures at the jail and he now believes “we are confident there are no security concerns with the facility at this time.”

Trujillo, 24, is 5 feet 6, inches tall. He is 140 pounds and has tattoos on his neck and chest. Police believe he may be armed and should be considered extremely dangerous.

Trujillo has an extensive criminal history. He was most recently in jail on an aggravated robbery charge.
