DENVER — The 9mm handgun Evan Ebel used to shoot a Texas police officer last week is the same weapon that killed Colorado Department of Corrections chief Tom Clements, ballistic analysts concluded Monday afternoon.

The confirmation goes well beyond proving the same caliber and brand of ammunition used and all but guarantees the accuracy of the finding based on microscopic evidence, the Colorado Springs Metro Crime Lab said.

Ebel, who was killed after a wild chase and shootout with police in Decatur, Texas, last week, has not officially been named as a suspect. He was named a person of interest in the murders of both Clements and pizza delivery driver Nathan Leon after ammunition, a Domino’s pizza jacket and a pizza box were found in the 1991 black Cadillac he was driving.

The car itself resembles a vehicle seen fleeing the Clements home in Monument after the DOC director was killed Tuesday night. One theory detectives have is that Ebel killed Leon in order to get the Domino’s uniform. The uniform would then help disguise Ebel so Clements would be more likely to answer the door.

Police emphasized that the case is still wide open and no clear motive has been established. Anyone with information regarding the crime was encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Office at 719-390-5555.
