TAMPA, Fla. — While Peyton Manning was in Denver visiting with Broncos management, Tim Tebow was continuing his charity efforts in his home state of Florida by surprising a soldier wounded in action in Afghanistan.

For U.S. Army Ranger Romy Camargo, a self-described “super fan,” Tebow’s visit was a huge surprise.

“That was awesome,” Camargo said. “I couldn’t believe it. I was like, ‘Wow!’, but I’m glad Gabby got to meet him because she’s a big fan.”

Both Camargo and his wife Gabriela were stunned when Tebow walked through the door.

“It’s my pleasure, man,” Tebow said to Camargo.

After reading what Camargo has endured since getting shot in the neck and being left a quadriplegic during a combat mission in Afghanistan, Tebow wanted to meet the wounded warrior.

“He’s a real, true-life hero,” Tebow said. “It’s very special to have the chance to hang out with him. Whose idea was it to make it a surprise meeting…the DeBartolo family?”

The DeBartolo Family Foundation held their gala fundraiser Friday night, and Eddie DeBartolo arranged the surprise meeting between Tebow and Camargo.

“They were talking to us and just telling us about his story. By the grace of God, we’re around this area,” Tebow said. “I said, ‘absolutely, I’d love to come hang out with him.’ He’s been an inspiration to a lot of people and he’ll continue to be an inspiration to me and so many more. It’s real exciting to get a chance to meet him.”

Tebow called Camargo a “true American hero” after the soldier sold his prized motorcycle to raise money for charity.

“For me, it’s so humbling to see kids. They’re like, ‘you’re my hero.’ I do nothing special. Athletes do nothing special. We play a silly game, but here’s someone who put his life on the line for our country. That’s a real hero,” he said.

With rumors swirling about his future , Tebow wouldn’t comment on his football future. This moment was all about paying tribute to a hero.

“I believe I’m gonna get up outta this chair even if it takes me the rest of my life,” Camargo said. “You see his faith in action on the field, how about your faith in action here, as you recover? Same way.”

Tebow is hosting several other charitable events in his home state of Florida this weekend.
